How does a gate-fold actually work?
Two outer panels fold inward and meet in the middle, so the piece opens outward like double doors. When closed you see the two flaps; when opened you reveal a wide inner spread. It is one physical sheet scored to fold in from both sides.
When should I choose gate-fold over another fold?
Pick a gate-fold when the reveal matters and you want a dramatic, symmetrical opening. It is ideal for premium brochures, launches and invitations. For a compact pocket leaflet or step-by-step story, a roll-fold or Z-fold is often more practical.
How should I design the two gate panels?
Treat the closed flaps as a teaser or cover, then design the inner spread as one continuous image or layout for maximum impact. Because the side panels are usually slightly narrower so they meet neatly, allow for that when placing artwork.
Do I need to allow for the fold in my artwork?
Yes. Keep key text and logos roughly 5mm clear of each fold line so nothing is lost in the crease, and include 3mm bleed on all outer edges. Your free digital proof shows the panel layout so you can confirm everything sits correctly.
